LIFE Services Clients Share Advocacy and Art with Mayor Johnson

Every week, LIFE Services clients go to Bloom at Concordia 27 for art therapy—a space where creativity, healing and community come together. On March 18, they were joined by a special visitor: Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson.

The mayor visited Scaling Wellness in Milwaukee (SWIM), a community partner of Bloom, to learn more about their wellness programs and efforts to expand access to mental health services. During his visit, he spent time with LIFE Services clients, listening to their stories and learning how community partnerships support recovery, self-expression and advocacy.

Clients shared what their days look like in programming and how art therapy has become a meaningful part of their lives. One client explained that they didn’t enjoy art before experiencing their brain injury, but through programming, they discovered art as a therapeutic outlet.

The conversation also highlighted the realities of living with invisible disabilities—such as autism, brain injuries, mental illness, learning disabilities and chronic pain —as well as the importance of welcoming and accessible environments.

“I’m working to make Milwaukee welcoming for everyone, no matter their ability,” said Mayor Johnson.

Clients spoke about how they advocate for change in their community, including involvement on councils and efforts to improve accessibility. Bloom works to increase access to art therapy and ensure everyone has opportunities to engage in meaningful, supportive activities.

With March being recognized as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and Brain Injury Awareness Month, the timing of the mayor’s visit was especially fitting. For LIFE Services, the visit was an opportunity to be heard—not just as program participants, but as advocates. Their stories illustrated the impact of inclusive programs and strong partnerships in building healthy, hopeful and inclusive communities.
