Mission Moment: Turning Lived Experiences into Hope

At CFI, our Crisis Resource Centers (CRCs) play a vital role in providing short-term stabilization and compassionate support for people experiencing mental health crises. They rely on skilled behavioral health specialists who bring empathy, resilience and a passion for helping others. One of those specialists is Karyn Burrow, whose work exemplifies our mission to support and advocate for people with disabilities and behavioral health needs.

Karyn joined CFI in 2024, drawn to crisis work because of her own lived experiences and her desire to be a steady source of support for others. Born with cerebral palsy, she understands how important it is for people to feel heard and valued – especially during vulnerable moments.

“I know how important it is to be there for someone,” she said.

As a behavioral health specialist, Karyn’s days are varied and people focused. She leads groups, welcomes new clients, and supports individuals one-on-one while maintaining a calm and safe environment.

A Safe Haven in Crisis

CFI’s CRCs offer an alternative to emergency rooms and inpatient facilities. They provide a peaceful, homelike setting where people can access immediate support, develop coping skills, and find community during their most vulnerable moments.

“People often don’t realize how much CRCs can help,” Karyn said. “We’re here to make sure they know they aren’t alone.”

Behavioral health specialists like Karyn are at the heart of that mission.

Advocacy in Action

Outside of her work at CFI, Karyn is also a fierce advocate for inclusion. In 2025, she was selected as Ms. Wheelchair Wisconsin and has recently been named Ms. Wheelchair Wisconsin state coordinator. Her platform focuses on disability inclusivity in society—a cause that aligns closely with the CRC’s commitment to meeting people where they are.

“A label doesn’t stop you,” she said. “Everyone deserves a seat at the table.”

Her advocacy work and her CRC role share a common thread: creating spaces where people feel valued, respected and supported regardless of their circumstances or abilities.

Why Consider a Career in Crisis Services?

A behavioral health specialist is more than a role – it’s a chance to make a real difference every day. People in this role:

  • Provide compassionate, hands-on case management services
  • Help individuals build independent living skills
  • Work alongside a dedicated clinical team
  • Make crisis care more accessible
  • Contribute to a safe, calm and healing environment

For those who feel called to support others, crisis services offer meaningful connections, professional growth and the opportunity to change lives.
