WNOV Community Voice Spotlights CFI and Behavioral Health in Milwaukee

Keith Parris, host of Community Voice on WNOV, recently sat down with CFI’s Vice President of Diversity Equity Inclusion and Community Affairs Al Hill and Associate Vice President Behavioral Health Rachel Leahy Hilker to discuss behavioral health in our community and to educate listeners about our services for children and adults. During the nearly hour-long interview, they discussed the mental health crisis, nationally and in Milwaukee, and how CFI meets people where they are by providing critical resources and support where it’s needed most.

As one of the largest providers of behavioral health services in Milwaukee County, Rachel and Al shared their unique perspectives on trends through the years and the importance of early intervention administered by culturally competent professionals through community-based services.

Rachel shared a story that illustrates CFI’s approach to meet people where they are. An unhoused client came to a Crisis Resource Center seeking shelter. Though he initially rejected offers of mental health support, CFI’s team was patient, yet persistent, eventually building trust and ultimately connecting him with additional support. Today, he has a home, a vehicle and is employed, thanks to the support he received through CFI.

Every individual is unique, as are their needs. While there’s less stigma associated with seeking help, barriers still remain.

“Mental health is not a deficiency,” said Parris. “You’re not less-than. You’re just dealing with something different-than. It’s good to have organizations (CFI) that provide help and treatment that people need.”
