4 Tips for Supporting Your Child in Therapy

As more families seek behavioral health support for their children, knowing how to support your child through therapy can feel overwhelming. Parents may have questions about what to say, how to help or whether they’re doing the “right” thing.

The good news is parents don’t have to navigate this alone.

Our expert therapists from CFI’s Children’s Behavioral Health Clinic share their top tips for parents to support their child’s mental health journey with confidence.

4 Tips for Supporting Your Child in Therapy

  1. Remember that therapy is not a punishment. Help them understand that therapy is a safe space to talk, learn and work through big emotions.
  2. Stay consistent. Attending sessions regularly builds trust with the therapist and helps your child make meaningful progress.
  3. Make therapy a safe space. To reinforce trust and encourages openness avoid punishing your child for anything they say or do during sessions.
  4. Take care of yourself, too. Managing your own stress allows you to model healthy coping skills and be more present for your child.

Supporting your child in therapy is a powerful step toward their well-being. With patience, consistency and compassion, you can help them build skills that last a lifetime.
